Interview w/ Jerry
Where were you born and raised? What is a favorite memory of childhood?
I was born in Newark and raised in Irvington, NJ, “The All American Town”. The thing I remember most was my family’s unity. My parents were always there for us. There were 4 kids, my dad worked two jobs and my mother took care of us. They made sure we got a good education and a solid foundation to build our lives on.
When did you start your own business, The Home Remodelers Group?
In 1964. We have been providing quality home improvement services to NJ homeowners for the past 40 years.
How have you seen the company grow and change over the years?
Nowadays, with computers and the internet, our customers are more educated and business savvy about their choices. They do their research, they get multiple bids. Our customers are able to tell right away that we are a solid, reputable company in an industry that can have many unscrupulous, fly-by-night operators. We’ve been around for 40 years, we back our products and services, and we care about a job well done. More and more families are choosing to improve and invest in their homes. They want a company they can rely on. We are meeting that need.
What is most important to you in your profession?
Customer service and satisfaction. The customer drives our business. We take pride in the quality of our work; we can assure our customers that we will be here for them in the future. It is important to me that we are helping people realize their dreams for the place they call home.
When did you start your radio show with WOR? What is your favorite part of doing the show?
I started my own show on WOR in May 2001. I love helping people solve their home improvement problems, sharing my experience with them, giving them the knowledge they need to make wise decisions concerning their home.
You receive hundreds of letters from your customers expressing how satisfied they are with the work of The Home Remodelers Group. Do you see a common thread in their comments to you?
It gives me great satisfaction to read those letters and know that we have done our job for our customers with courtesy, skilled workmanship, and integrity. I have customers that I have known for many years and I am honored that they keep coming back to us for their home improvement needs. They know they can trust me and my company to do our very best for them.
Jerry, I understand this is a family business and that your son Marc now runs the day to day operations of the business. You must be very proud. What is the most important aspect of this legacy to you?
Continuity of service. Knowing that the work I have started will continue. Marc is a very bright guy with a degree in law and finance. He is my partner in the business, and it makes me very proud that my son shares the same values I do in his dedication to our customers.
In a industry where 80% of companies fail in three years, you have maintained this company for 40 years. How have you survived?
By doing the right thing. By focusing on three things: customer satisfaction, quality service, value and quality in our products.
I like the company slogan, “Large enough to serve all of our customers, yet small enough to care.” Why is that particular slogan the one you want your customers to remember about The Home Remodelers Group?
It sums up the things I care about the most: One on one personal service and quality work. You can go to a big chain store, see a beautiful home improvement display, sign a contract. Then you have a problem, go back to the store, the person who sold you the products are gone and you have no one to talk to. We have the ability deliver professional work and quality products, without ever losing our personal touch.
As your company continues to grow, what are your goals for the future?
We look forward to adding new product lines to expand the options available to our customers. Growing our company by expanding into new territories but wisely and slowly, never at the expense of quality and customer service.
In closing, is there anything you would like to say to your customers?
Thank you, to our customers past, present and future. There are few things in life more personal and dear than the place you call home. We appreciate being the company you trust to make the home improvements you dream of a reality.
"Now that our bathroom remodeling is complete, I just wanted you to know how happy we were with the whole thing."
